Best Tips for Graduation Photos

Needing some graduation photos?

This blog is a list of my ABSOLUTE favorite tips for any graduating senior. The key to good grad photos is variety! You might not be printing that many photos for your grad announcement, but you DEFINITELY don’t want all 5 of your images to be the exact same pose in 5 different spots. So take a look at these tips and practice posing! Take a look in the mirror and SMILE away! These tips will ensure you have plenty of variety to your grad photos, confidence, AND a super happy photographer!

Tip #1: MOVE!

The best advice I could give any graduating senior is to KEEP MOVING! A good photographer will know how to pose you to look good, it’s true. But it makes a WORLD of difference if the model is active! Getting those amazing, fun, candid shots has a very key element…. They must be CANDID! The best looking photos in my opinion are the ones where the subject is truly candid, and just being who they are! So keep moving! Walking is a great go to because guess what…we ALL do it ALL the time! If you ever get stuck and start to feel uncomfortable, just take a walk! Towards the camera, away from the camera, sideways, you name it!

Tip #2: Use the props well!

When grads dress up in their robes, I make sure they use the outfit well. Make sure everything is straight, and leave the front open so you don’t look like a balloon! (Those things are huge). Grab your cap and hold it in front of you, down by your side, or high above your head for the full celebration effect.

Tip #3: Get out of the robes

As much as I love graduation outfits, I am here to tell you you do NOT need to be completely dressed up the entire shoot! You will feel much more relaxed in a cute/ comfy outfit you wore underneath. So take off the robes and the hat, and play around! Dance, walk, spin, be crazy! All your family and friends want to see the REAL you on your announcement, not the stiff intellectual school makes you believe you have to be! You can be a unique and fun intellectual if you want 🙂

Tip #4: HAVE FUN

Trust me when I say NO ONE wants to see stiff high school or college grad announcements. If you aren’t comfortable, then just let loose! Forget you’re taking photos and imagine you are just having a fun sunny day by yourself with no one watching! As a photographer, my job is to make you feel as comfortable as I possibly can, so I will be prompting you to move around, dance, jump, and have fun! I PROMISE we will have a good time with your photos. All you need to do is show up, dance like no one’s watching, and be yourself! I’ll capture the rest! 🙂
